The Academy will develop, educate, train, and support Maryland’s child welfare staff, supervisors; administrators; foster parents; and kinship caregivers to provide family centered; culturally competent services to protect children from maltreatment, achieve permanency, and promote child well-being. In-Service Training for Child Welfare Professionals April - June 2013 Training Quarterly
Restricted Access - ONLY State of Maryland DHR/DSS Family and Child Welfare staff are eligible to participate in training. Adult Services staff are advised to see their supervisor for a schedule of Adult Services workshops. Registrations will be monitored.

*Click to listen to or download our Signs of Safety webinar series* Signs of Safety: Effectively Using Mapping in the Field and Office Signs of Safety: Creation And Improvement Of Safety Plans Signs of Safety: Reunification Planning Child & Adolescent Needs & Strengths Trainings With successful completion of these trainings, participants should be able to rate items on the Child & Adolescent Needs & Strengths (CANS) measure reliably and have the foundation for utilizing this measure in their work. A certification test will be administered at the end of the session for participants, who will use the instrument in their practice setting. Training activities will include: • Defining the various sections and rating system of the CANS, • Rating a sample CANS vignette, and • Identifying how to utilize CANS in decision making. The UMB Innovations Institute Training Program is authorized to sponsor social work continuing professional education credits by the Maryland State Board of Social Work Examiners. SSW Continuing Professional Education Workshops Sponsored by the CWA for SSA and LDSS Staff Continuing Professional Education website Continuing Professional Education "Bloom Catalog" Course offerings Resource Parent Continuing Education Offerings Continuing education is offered statewide to Maryland Resource Parents through the Maryland Department of Human Resources (DHR) and University of Maryland (UM), School of Social Work (SSW), Child Welfare Academy (CWA) partnership. The training provides resource parents with professional development education, resources, and tools to help with complex situations or issues related to caring for children, youth and teens in foster care. UPCOMING EVENTS Only resource parents and kinship caregivers approved by Maryland DHR local departments of social services are eligible to register and attend the continuing education training offered by UM SSW CWA. Adult Services Offerings The Training Program proposes a total 7 days of Pre-Service Training offered one time per year and twelve days of continuing education training during the period dedicated to CSA’s adult services staff. The training will be designed to enhance the work-related knowledge, skills, and competence of the trainees and will be grounded in adult learning principles. CEU’s will be provided at the rate of 6 units per each day of training for individuals who complete a workshop. View Calendar and Register Pre-Service Training Schedule for Adult Services Staff (please contact Personnel Liaison in your agency to register) The School of Social Work has partnered with Department of Human Resource’s Community Services Administration to provide quality training for DHR and the local departments of social services. The Training Program utilizes a competency-based approach in developing and delivering training. A competency-based approach to training provides staff with awareness, knowledge, and skills required to perform role-related tasks. The Training Program will be conducted by licensed clinical social workers and other licensed professionals with expertise in adult learning. The content areas for the training are relevant to adult services staff and topics for the training will be determined in conjunction with input from local departments of social service and CSA.
