PROJECT NAME: Evaluation of the Judicare Program

ABSTRACT:  Judicare provides low-cost legal services to indigent clients in family law cases. The Ruth Young Center for Families and Children (RYC) will evaluate the Judicare program. The evaluation will provide an overview of how the program is implemented in Maryland. RYC researchers will provide a report on the foundations of Judicare practice and stakeholder satisfaction (including lawyers involved in the Judicare project and recipients of the Judicare program). The evaluation will also examine the context of the Judicare program regarding the different jurisdictions in which it operates and the use of staff attorneys and attorneys from the private bar. This will offer a comparative perspective as well as an opportunity to disseminate information on different approaches that may be suited to different jurisdictions.

Bowie State University, a Maryland Judiciary Research Consortium member institution, is a collaborating partner on this project. Input into research activities will also come from an advisory committee of involved stakeholders.
